THE HISTORY OF THE HYATT BRAND

John Wesley Hyatt was an American inventor who designed machinery for many processes, including turning sugar cane into sugar. Central to this invention was a unique flexible bearing. A bearing that became the beginnings of the Hyatt Roller Bearing company-born in 1892, New Jersey. The timing for Hyatt could not have been better. 1900 saw the first auto show in New York. At the same time more than 100 firms in the USA were developing automobiles.
In 1901, Ransom Olds designed and built the Oldsmobile Curved Dash, a car with a one cylinder engine. 400 were built and became an instant hit. Hyatt supplied all the axle bearings.
Hyatt continued to expand as an automotive supplier, taking on Ford’s Model T which became the leading seller. Hyatt’s 20th century growth saw expansion into industrial equipment for mining, textiles, steel mills, road building, power transmission, farm machinery and railroad cars. Hyatt became a division of General Motors.
In 1980 GM announced it would close its Hyatt plant and buy its bearings from outside sources. Hyatt’s 1600 workers raised $53 million, bought the plant from GM, and became an employee-owned entity known as Hyatt-Clark Industries. The employee owners struggled between re-investing in the business and sharing the profits with the employees who had sacrificed for the good of the company.
In 1987, General Bearing Corporation purchased the assets of Hyatt-Clark Industries for $6 million.
2005 saw rapid expansion at the plants in China with a new addition in Shanghai. A new building in Ningbo known as SGBC-N meant factory floor space had almost tripled.
In 2012 SKF purchased General Bearing Corporation and the Hyatt trademark.
